I have been “keeping on eye on” the Anhinga population near Carson in Prince George County, Virginia as I travel south weekly into North Carolina.  The maxima I have observed during any one visit was eleven (11) individuals.

As I traveled to North Carolina on I-95, I observed a kettle of Anhinga (5) flying in both Prince George and Sussex Counties.  This to date is my top count for this area.

I visited Fluvanna County this morning and walked along the James River in search of odonates with a specific focus on clubtails.  In the two hours I searched I found the following:

  • Cobra Clubtail- approximately 50 individuals
  • Black-shouldered Spinylegs- approximately 40 individuals (a few teneral individuals still emerging)
  • Blackwater Clubtail- 2 individuals observed; one male and one female
  • Splendid Clubtail- 1 individual noted
  • Dragonhunter- a conservative 22+ individuals; the most I have observed in a single day
  • Eastern Ringtail- approximately 45+ individuals; most were teneral and were being preyed upon by Cobra Clutails and the Blackwater Clubtail
