Red-tailed Hawk

Identification: Note in eastern adult the red tail, the belly band, the dark patagium (area between neck and elbow),
white throat, above dark brown with visible red tail.

Eastern Red-tailed Hawk

"This bird looks very much like an Eastern Canadian RT, with extensive belly band but
pale throat, face, and chest and very pale uppertail coverts and upperwing
covert mottling. Also has warm pale brown upperside."

The bird was photographed in Goochland County, Virginia on January 8, 2005.
 
An apparent Krider's x borealis intergrade found in Hyde County, North Carolina during December, 2005.

The scapular area was brown with much white mottling which
was also observed on the back.
The tail was lightly barred with a light rufuous wash
very pale (white) underneath with minimal belly band
