Great Black-backed Gull Predation on American Coot
The series of photographs below were taken at Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina. The entire scenario took only 3 1/2 minutes and involved two different American Coots. The series is sequential from the top down. I stumbled upon the first A. Coot being attacked by the Great Black-backed Gull and it successfully fended off the attack. The gull then culled out another individual from the flock and proceeded to grasp it by the head/neck repetitively over about a 2 minute period with the last two or three photopraphs depicting the outcome.
