Cackling Goose (minima subspecies)

Identification: The minima subspecies is the smallest of the of group of geese comprising the Cackling Goose designation. The three (3) birds below were observed on the 2004 Christmas Bird Count at Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge. Besides the birds small size, note the extensive white check, the tiny stubby bill, their rounded head, short neck and their dark breast.
