Big Bluet (Enallagma durum)
Identification: A large bluet with both the male and female having the black shoulder stripe and with a blue mid-dorsal carina. Make note that the size of the this bluet, the size of the shoulder stripe and some latitude with the blue on S8 & S9 is variable as can be seen below. The blue eyespots are small and elongated teardrop shaped connected by thin occipital bar. The male has arrow shaped black marking pointing toward the head on its' abdomen and the terminal appendages are relatively small. The adult female can be blue or olive brown colored with all of the dorsal view of the abdomen being black with very small blue or olive bands at the anterior end of the segments.
The three photographs below demonstrate some of the variability in shoulder stripe size and S8 & S9 coloration.
