American Woodcock

Identification: A chunky shorebird with long bill, large head, short stocky neck and short legs. Note the tan to orange coloration below, the gray on the coverts and the myriad of browns, blacks, tans and orange above to provide camouflage when observed in the normal forest, bogs, fields in which it is normally found.

The bird below was photographed in Sussex County, Virginia choosing to cross a gravel road early in the morning.
